Daily Lunch Walk, now with Funky Feet!

Yesterday’s lunch walk was just to Safeway for lunch supplies (yogurt and strawberries) because it was cold and rainy, so not blog worthy. Although I will say that no matter how much I really really want to like yogurt, I just don’t. Sigh.

Anyways, the excitement for today’s walk is the addition of a walkmate! May I introduce my office pal, Rosa, hereafter known as Funky Feet. For obvious reasons…

I am sad to announce that is the only picture with today’s walk, because I forgot my camera, AGAIN.

Since it was Funky Feet’s inaugural blog walk, I let her decide the route. And she chose one very much like the one I did last week (except she made me walk on the sunny side of the street to offset the bitter wind...thankfully I didn't get too pink). First cutting over to 6th to avoid the tourists and taking the loooong walk downhill towards the Mall.

Excitement at the corner of 6th and Pennsylvania...a motorcade! Yay! Lots of sirens and tinted windows and men with black suits and earpieces, but no presidential flags. No flags at all actually, which is kinda rare for the motorcades that I have seen.

After the kerfuffle passed, we headed down to Constitution and walked pass the Federal Trade Commission building and turned at the Archives for our return walk, cutting over to 8th at the Navy Memorial to avoid tourists on 7th.

We must look like locals though, because we were asked for directions more than once by little lost groups; I am not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing to look like a DC local though. :-P

A man in a jaunty red hat passed us by near the Portrait Gallery, and I once again lamented my lack of camera.

But we arrived safe and sound back at I Street, feeling virtuously fit and caught up on all the gossip with each other.

Hopefully Funky Feet will join me again and we will get a little more creative with our route. Ha!

Daily Lunchtime Walk in DC

Every day at lunch I take a walk. Sometimes short ones, sometimes long ones, but I try to get out every day (OK, so I have only been doing it for two weeks, but still. So far, so good). Today's walk was particularly fun, which has inspired me to add this new daily feature: Lunchtime Walks in DC. Sadly I had no camera with me today, a situation that will be remedied in the future.

Started off from work on I street and took a loooong downhill walk down 6th street to the National Mall. Yay for avoiding the horrible tourist traffic on 7th!

About two blocks from the mall, I passed a dog walker who had 6 of the most adorable little pups ever (Camera! Crap!).

It was gorgeous out and not too sunny (I burst into flames in the sun, so I often take a mid-walk break inside some museum or another), so I sat for a while in the Sculpture Garden and had an orange (0 points! Yeah!). Sadly the fountain is still in its winter ice skating mode with no ice, but it was nice nonetheless.

On my way out of garden, I educated some mini-tourists on the niceties of Roy Lichtenstein since I overheard their teacher say "I Don't Know" (???!!!???) when asked about him. Thank you Art History Degree!

Took a detour through the Butterfly Habitat Garden which has always been one of my favorite Smithsonian gardens. Past the National Archives and back up 9th for the long uphill(!) walk back to work.

Along the way, I was able to direct some French tourists who were very lost and confused. I am sure my grammar was atrocious, but I did manage to remember how to say "right" and "left", which isn't bad for 15+ years of total non-use.

Resisted the urge to stop at the corner hot dog lady and returned safely back to work in the allotted time of one hour.
